Do you ever wonder if your journalistic skills are still up to the task of capturing today’s global complexity? Do you sometimes sense that your reporting might unintentionally deepen social divides rather than help to bridge them?
Then Integral Journalism might be exactly what you need.
It is a proven framework to handle complexity with ease—and to decode the human psyche with professional precision.
Integral Journalists identify the pro-social potential within every perspective. They see through their own biases and “internal fake news” and possess a high degree of resonance intelligence. They facilitate dialectical dialogue and have mastered the art of constructive-critical reporting.
The result is a future-ready journalism that counters polarization and populism while unlocking new, sustainable revenue streams.
The IJ Model
The Integral Journalism model combines methods and concepts from dozens of progressive approaches — such as constructive journalism, peace journalism, and the “Unbias The News” movement. It enriches them with psychological, systemic, and discourse-theoretical methods — while strengthening classic journalistic virtues such as critical thinking and factual accuracy.
Dmitry Shishkin's User Needs Model is also integrated into the IJ model and has been further developed so that stories serve the audience, society, the journalism business, and the personal needs of journalists.
The IJ model changes the entire story production process — from sensing topics to multi-perspective research to integral storytelling.
The relationship between media and audience has been completely reimagined—as a mutually permeable resonance space in which premium customers can help shape non-confidential stories in all phases of production.
Relevant and profitable
Integral journalism creates an engaged core user base. Inspiring articles have been shown to increase engagement time, while empathetic stories increase engagement and community interaction. The number of subscriptions and trust in media brands are also positively influenced.
At the same time, integral journalism appeals to younger target groups in particular, as pluralism, empathy, and future opportunities are often highly valued by them.
Media companies that focus on integral journalism can also position themselves as innovation leaders and meaningful employers. This can help with talent acquisition.

The key competences of Integral Journalism
Complexity Competence
Open up spaces for understanding. Depict and integrate more perspectives, contexts, and contrasts in a balanced way. At the same time, remain clear and understandable—by sorting diversity with systemic tools. User needs: Give me perspective, educate me. Method examples: Integral Research Map, Polarity Management, Overton Window.
Bias Awareness
Open up in-between spaces. Question prejudices, allow ambiguity. At the same time, maintain measurable objective truths—with approaches from meditation, constructivism, and cognitive psychology. User needs: Give me perspective, educate me, inspire me. Method examples: Typology of Cognitive Biases, Reality Tiers, Witness Meditation.
Resonance Intelligence
Open up spaces for resonance. Develop greater empathy for protagonists, recipients, collective trauma, and for yourself. At the same time, remain analytically sharp—thanks to proven techniques from coaching, psychotherapy, and wisdom traditions. User needs: Move me, connect me, reassure me, amuse me. Method examples: Levels of Listening, Global Social Witnessing, Trauma sensitive Journalism.
Discourse Maturity
Open up we spaces. Strengthen acceptance for opposing viewpoints. Model co-creative dialogues. At the same time, allow for disagreement and friction—using methods from communication theory and mediation. User needs: Connect me, reassure me. Method examples: Bohm's Dialogue, Warm Data Labs, Nonviolent communication.
Prosocial Impact
Open up spaces of possibilities. Tell stories that restore enthusiasm for the future. At the same time, remain critical, thanks to proven approaches from change management, systems theory, and developmental psychology. User needs: Inspire me, help me. Method examples: Solution Based Journalism, Systemic- transformational reporting, Immunity to Change-Process.
The IJ-Matrix
The five IJ principles are incorporated into all seven stages of production—from expanding journalistic role models to research and fine-tuning. The IJ catalog comprises more than 100 methods that integrate ideas and techniques from many different disciplines. The overriding aim is always to promote a more prosocial reporting.

"There is much speculation about the future of journalism, but the ideas often amount to little more than small cogs of change in the vast machine of “business as usual.” Here's a nice feature, a new newsletter, a cautious flirtation with one or two user needs. What Stefan Schultz has begun to bring into the world under the title “Integral Journalism” is the opposite of that: radical, comprehensively different, deeply human, full of wisdom, science, spirit, and soul. Nothing less than an attempt to train journalists to be development companions for the growth and maturation of our society. From our standpoint, this is the most courageous and innovative approach currently to be found in journalism."
Sebastian Pantel, Editorial Development, Südkurier
"I am so happy to be participating in the pilot round of the Integral Journalism Masterclass. This one year program is unique in Germany. Because it opens your eyes to rethinking your own role as a journalist. Because the ideas behind it are enormously important for our industry, but also for our society. Because Stefan is not only a super-competent lecturer, but also shows incredible commitment to getting everyone on board and creating a positive course atmosphere. And, perhaps most importantly, because the face-to-face meetings are experiences you will never forget (and that is not an exaggeration). I can wholeheartedly recommend this workshop. Thank you for this special journey, dear Stefan!"
Stephan Orth, travel journalist & author
“I would like to express my utmost respect for the Integral Journalism Masterclass! I have been participating in the pilot course since August and find the project to be greatly enriching on many levels. Your subtle analysis of our industry and its challenges is spot on. The transfer of personality development approaches as part of the solution makes perfect sense to me—this is where opportunities lie to take journalism to another level. Tolerance of ambiguity and maturity of discourse are two important keywords here. The group meetings are full of eye-opening moments and wonderful encounters with people from across the industry, where newspapers meet radio meets television. I highly recommend it—thank you for everything."
Stefanie Geißler, SWR editor
"The text clinic with Stefan was great. At first, I was skeptical about whether I could get to grips with the wide-ranging integral journalism concept. But Stefan introduced and taught the tools for implementing it in a practical and realistic way. I quickly noticed how my story gained depth. I will continue to work my way into this concept of journalism and test whether it enables me to produce better texts. It worked great on my first attempt."
Christoph Wöhrle, freelance Journalist
"
"As the organizer of the Media Lab Innovation Festival 2025, it was a great pleasure to have Stefan Schultz on the program. His workshop thrilled the participants: full of eye-opening moments, practical tools, and inspiring changes of perspective. I was particularly impressed by how clearly, structurally, and appreciatively he conveyed complex content. Anyone working in journalism should definitely experience this workshop. Highly recommended!"
Carina Hüttner, Media Lab Bayern
"Stefan Schultz was a guest lecturer in my graduate journalism class at the University of British Columbia. He presented part of his model for Integral Journalism on research. His approach is original and addresses long-standing gaps in journalism. His model incorporates a range of disciplines including psychology in ways that counter urgent concerns, such as news avoidance and polarization. I highly recommend Stefan’s approach as an important comprehensive and developmental tool to support repair and transform journalism."
Mary-Lynn Young, Professor of Journalism, University of British Columbia
„I worked intensively with Stefan on a portrait, and he sensitised me to include further perspectives. Not just: What does my protagonist do? But also: How does he feel about it? And what has shaped him, what has he experienced, what makes him act this way? Stefan's input was great for making my protagonist more relatable and the article more emotionally profound.“
Heike Klovert, editor at "Spiegel" magazine
